Nutrition trends for 2013
The top seven nutrition trends we hope to see more of this year.
1. Eat your green, red, yellow and orange
This is not a new trend in any way, but we still believe that eating several servings of healthy vegetables of different colours everyday is a great way of getting many of the micronutrients you need. For 2013 we hope to see more focus on organic colourful vegetables of all sorts on the plate and much less grains.
2. Grass fed instead of grain fed meat
If you are a meat-eater the way to do it in 2013 is grassfed. To quote Dr. Mercola: When we switch from grainfed to grassfed meat, then, we are simply returning to the diet of our long-ago ancestors, the diet that is most in harmony with our physiology. Every cell and every system of our bodies will function better when we eat products from animals raised on grass. Grass-fed beef has more omega-3 than grain fed beef. Grass-fed beef is loaded with other natural minerals and vitamins, plus it’s a great source of CLA (conjugated linoleic acid).
3. Drinking hidden sugar? No thanks!
Say no to “healthy” sports drinks or vitamin drinks. Just look at the label: added fructose, sugars, stripped synthetic isolated vitamins/minerals and colour additives. The irony is that these drinks are claiming to energize you but in the long run they will probably drain your energy due to the negative effect on your blood sugar. If you are an amateur sportsman/woman go for water during your training. This will do you more good than drinking disguised sodas.
4. Let food cost – A chicken for six dollars?
The saying: you get what you pay for is very true for the food industry. You cannot expect to get high quality foods cheaply. If you want to be on top of your game and stay healthy let as much as possible of you budget go to high quality, organic food. It will cost more but it will be worth it and who knows, maybe you will pay less doctor’s bills in the long run. More and more people prioritize high quality foods and dinner parties with focus on what is actually on the plate are becoming more and more popular. In 2013 we foresee that “Cuisine of quality” with more dollars spent on the food will not only be a healthy nutritional trend but a social trend.
5. Switch from synthetic supplements to whole food supplements
Just as we advocate natural harm free organic skin care we hope to see a switch from isolated synthetic dietary supplements to organic whole food supplements. Synthetic isolated supplements have an isolated single molecule stripped of all the beneficial co factors found in food. In contrast wholefood supplements have these co-factors needed for maximum bioavailability. We foresee that more and more people will look for natural organic high quality whole food supplements. 6. Fat is fantastic (not around your belly…)
The old (bad?) science has taught us to be afraid of dietary fats but new (good) science tells us the opposite. Many fats are healthy and important for you. These indigenous people eat plenty of monounsaturated and saturated fat and have no signs of cardiovascular problems: Inuit, Tokelau, Masai, Rendil Tribe. Also, a study from 2010 concluded that that there is no significant evidence for concluding that dietary saturated fat is associated with an increased risk of Coronary heart disease or Cardiovascular Diseas. Walter Willett is the chairman of the department of nutrition at the Harvard School of Public Health is the spokesman of the longest running and most expensive health study on the subject. He says: “Those data clearly contradict the low-fat-is-good-health message ”and the idea that all fat is bad for you; the exclusive focus on adverse effects of fat may have contributed to the obesity epidemic.” Who’s to blame then? The answer: sugar and too much omega-6 fats. So for 2013 we hope that the trend will be to stop cutting away the fat from your meat and instead enjoy it. Also, take an extra portion of olive oil but reject the industry transfats, hydrogenated fats and vegetable oils (apart from olive oil) like the plague.
7. More organic and non GMO food instead of pesticides and “Frankenfood”
Organic choices have been around for a long time but for 2013 we really foresee that this trend will boom together with the active choice of not going for GMO (Genetically Modified Organisms). Thanks to the widespread effect of internet’s scary reports of GMO and pesticides that are suddenly available to the public, stories like this one cannot be stopped: Within a very short time, three women gave birth to children with extremly severe birth defects. These women all lived near and worked on tomato fields and were exposed to pesticides on a regular basis of which some were known “developmental and reproductive toxins”. Furthermore, one study identified an average 200 contaminants — including organochlorine pesticides — in newborn cordblood. Most people understand the connection between toxins and disease and then the trend we see and hope to see more of is: If someone has to wear a safety mask and safety dress during the agricultural process of a food, it is probably wise to skip it when it’s on your plate.
Regarding GMO, Dr. Mercola writes: “An analysis of 19 animal studies revealed that nearly 10 percent of blood, urine, organ and other parameters tested were significantly influenced by GMOs, with the livers and kidneys faring the worst.” Monsanto had a focus groups testing their GMO cucumbers and Dr. Nancy Walker, Director of Public Health Research at Dalhousie in Canada said “Fully 3/4 of the people who ate these cukes had their crotch area hair fall out. This is not a joking matter at all…these people now have hairless heinies.” More and more people start to be wary about GMO and the province Nova Scotia in Canada have banned Monsanto GMO food products. Monsanto Inc, issued a statement saying, “Next generation fruits and vegetables, including VO5 cucumbers, are safe for human consumption with some potential minor side effects. Some fine-tuning is underway.” Well, before that fine tuning is done, we hope that the trend for 2013 will be non GMO-foods on the plates.
