The importance of Time Alone
Today Spa Director Carolina Moquist, LivNordic Spa & Wellness, Cayan Tower in Dubai is our Guest Blogger and she writes about the importance of “Time alone”.
As a working mother in the busy, buzzy city of Dubai I sometimes find it hard to get some “me time”. It sometimes goes days or weeks without me having any time for myself and particularly no time alone.
But is time alone a good thing? A research by Reed W Larsen showed that people who are comfortable with being alone generally has lower rates of depression, fewer physical ailments, better overall satisfaction with life, improved concentration and creativity. Other benefits of time alone is that it gives you a chance to slow down and evaluate what is going on around you. So, maybe we all should try to find some more “me-time” and be really comfortable with that?
A moment to your self can help with recharging from the stress of being around others. If “unlimited” alone time still scares you, set a timer for yourself even if it’s just fifteen minutes dedicated to stillness. You’ll be surprised at how quickly the time passes and how recharged you’ll feel afterward.
Or as the famous poet Rumi once said “A little while alone in your room will prove more valuable than anything else that could ever be given you.”
I’m the type of person who appreciate time alone as it keeps me grounded, recharged and focused on what’s going on around me. Therefore I have lately explored options on how I can find short moments of “me-time” in my daily life. Perhaps some of my suggested short moments can help you to incorporate short moments of “me “time in to your hectic schedule?
Listen to the silence – Find a quiet place and listen to what the silence is telling you.
People watching – Visit a cafe that you like. Have a coffee and simply enjoy the energy of the people around you.
Read a great book – Enjoy 15 minutes of reading before bedtime every day instead of watching TV. This will also enhance a better sleep.
A few rounds of Yoga poses – A few sun salutations is especially great in the morning to get the circulation going and will keep you energized for the rest of the day.
Visit a spa – I love going to spas on my own. As Spa and Wellness is not only my job, but also my passion, I find it very interesting to visit different spas. The soft mellow music and the nice aromatic spells and of course combined with a great treatment is indeed real quality time with oneself.
A brisk walk on the beach– Isn’t the beach and the waves the most therapeutic experience ever?
Meditation – 5 minutes of meditation every day really helps to keep yourself grounded and focus on your goals.
